ACV has made a submission to the Victorian Government's consultation on the future of food safety in Victoria. It makes the following recommendations to ensure the proposed regulatory reforms adequately prioritise long-term health and

reduce alcohol-related harms:

  1. The Minister for Health remains the lead Minister representing Victoria at the Food Ministers’ Meeting.

  2. A function dedicated to protection of the population from the long-term public health risks of alcohol (and other unhealthy food and drink) be embedded within the operations of the new food regulator, including addiction and public health expertise.

  3. The Board of the new food regulator includes dedicated representatives of relevant Victorian organisations with expertise in alcohol-related harm and dependence.

  4. A distinct public health consultative committee, without commercial conflicts of interest and with alcohol-related harm and dependence expertise (including lived experience) be established to advise the new food regulator.
