ACV made a major submission to the Commonwealth Standing Committee on Health, Aged Care and Sport’s Inquiry into the health impacts of alcohol and other drugs in Australia. Our submission made several recommendations, including to:

  • reform the way alcohol products are taxed;

  • introduce mandatory health warning labels on alcohol products;

  • strengthen alcohol advertising standards;

  • improve treatment, care, and support for people experiencing alcohol (and other drug) harms; and

  • prevent and minimise the harmful effects of foetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Many of ACV’s member organisations also made their own submissions to the inquiry, including ACEM, ADF, CAPR, FARE, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, The Salvation Army, Turning Point, Uniting Church Synod of Victoria and Tasmania, and VAADA. The ADF, ACEM, CAPR, and Turning Point also provided evidence to the committee at public hearings. This is an important and timely inquiry, and we look forward to the committee’s report, as well as the government's response to its findings.
