Deputy Director of the Centre for Alcohol Policy and Research, Dr Amy Pennay's latest article examines Australia’s “alcohol harm paradox”, where people in disadvantaged areas face more alcohol-related harm despite drinking less than those in wealthier areas. Behavioural factors don’t fully explain the disparity, which stems from wider social and structural inequalities.

Dr Pennay calls for policies that tackle systemic issues (such as reducing alcohol outlet density, introducing minimum unit pricing, and improving access to housing and healthcare) to address alcohol harm at its roots.
